Home-Link Trust Inc is currently working to realize the aspirations of the SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS [SABA] through ABA IN AFRICA PILOT PROJECT in BENIN-CITY NIGERIA. WHY AFRICA? Africa continues to exist as unexplored continent as far as information on the prevalence and impact of disabilities on its inhabitants are concerned. It is an axiom that there remain
huge issues with government policy, cultural perspective, early screening, diagnosis and treatment of children with autism and other developmental disabilities in Africa. In the light of the above, Home-Link Trust Inc has established
a demonstration project [in collaboration with some existing
non-governmental organizations] for replicating the practice of applied behavior analysis in the management of children with developmental disabilities in Nigeria; - the most populated black Nation in the world! The focus of services for this project include:
Diagnostic (screening) evaluation – Medical/Psychiatric, Psychological evaluation- IQ and SIB-R and Psychosocial evaluation.
Comprehensive Behavioral Assessment [functional behavior assessment, OT, PT, SLP evaluation] of about five selected children who meet the developmental disabilities criteria for autistic spectrum disorder and mental retardation.
Development of treatment plan [individual program plan and individual treatment or implementation plan].
The recruitment and employment of one graduate staff [with education back-ground].
Two weeks training in Applied Behavior Analysis/Intensive Behavior Intervention for five staff members of the participating non-govermental organization/institutions.
Infrastructure development – renovation of the available building to provide for one class room and a resource room for service provision.
Provision of resource materials – books, computers and educational CDs. SHORT-TERM IMPACT ANTICIPATED
Application of Behavior Analysis Practice
LONG-TERM IMPACT ANTICIPATED
This demonstration project will service to continue to sustain the practice of Applied Behavior Analysis in Nigeria.
It will also serve as a reference system from which similar and other non-governmental organizations can replicate the practice of Applied Behavior Analysis.
Through this project, we anticipate an offshoot of policy development as it relates to the provision of Health services and Special Education services in that State in Nigeria.
This project may also serve to induce some departments of higher institutions in Nigeria to seek collaborative assistance with BACB to develop appropriate curriculum for the teaching of Applied Behavior Analysis in Nigeria.
The ABA IN AFRICA project will serve as a bridge or communication link between the practice of Applied Behavior Analysis in Africa and ABA INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION.
ABA IN AFRICA PROJECT will serve as nucleus for crystallizing and generation of the much needed information/data about behavior analytic services in the continent of Africa.
